Eat, Yoga, Love in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Hello Family and Friends,

We are currently in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia for our eighth night. We were only supposed to be here for six nights, but weather changed our plans a bit and stopped our boat from leaving to Gili Islands. Luckily for us, Ubud is a pretty great place to be stuck. The city is known as the cultural and spiritual center of Bali. People come here to find themselves and free their minds from everyday stresses. It has a very slow pace of life. We have been enjoying lounging in coffee shops, practicing yoga, and walking around rice fields. Doing nothing is what Ubud is all about. We have also met many nice people in Bali. Everyone seems to have positive energy which adds to the buzz of the city. On our way to Goa Gajah, we ran into a great guy from Japan who we spent a couple days with. Our energies matched immediately. He is still learning to speak English, but it didn't matter. Sometimes connections are there and language barriers are not so important. We have learned a lot while in Ubud and we sincerely look forward to being here again one day. Maybe next time, one of you will come with us. Please enjoy the following images from our relaxing trip.

First, our accommodations

We had a whole floor for you, Ryan and Julita. You never showed up

The view from our balcony

The Yoga Barn- one of the most beautiful settings to practice yoga

The locals carry the craziest things on their heads. This group of workers was transporting bricks. They must have strong necks

Spiritual Bali- Temples are located everywhere you look throughout the city

Lotus Temple

Locals on the main street waiting for a ceremony to start

Champuan Ridge trail- This trail allowed us to see the real Ubud. It winds through local houses and shops. We met an amazing painter who was incredibly friendly. We went back to buy a painting from him, but he was in the hospital. We are hoping he has a full recovery

Ducks wading through the rice fields

Mila writing down our order for lunch. We ate right in the middle of a rice field

On another day we went to Ubud's most famous attraction, Monkey Forrest. As the name implies, its a forrest full of monkeys who do silly things such as...No National Geographics, you cannot use these pictures

Also in Monkey Forrest, Komodo Dragons!

Goa Gajah- this is where we met our new friend Tomo, from Japan. We were both lost so we decided we would join forces. As a team, we made it to the temple/ cave

Tomo!!!

On another day Mila, Tomo and I hired a driver to take us around some areas outside of Ubud. We had a full itinerary, but it was a great day

The Royal Palace (Mengwi)

Coffee Plantation- here we tried the coffee beans that have gone through the digestive system of a Luwak. Apparently they are more boisterous at night.

Mila has the Luwak coffee...tastes like coffee

Mila next to a jackfruit grown on the plantation

Once you get a little Luwak coffee in your system, things can get crazy

Bedugal- one of the symbols of Bali

The most beautiful rice field in all of Bali, subjectively speaking

On our final day, we went and watched the herons fly into Petula for the night. 15,000- 20,000 birds nest on the trees in Petula. We watched them fly in for a couple of hours. It was a pretty neat experience as long as you don't get pooped on

Don't play coy with me

Artwork in Ubud

Our favorite coffee shop called Seniman. It looks like a science lab and produces delicious coffee. We spent many hours there

Oh, the food

Is this love that I'm feeling

Tomorrow we head back to Kuta beach to spend a few more nights before taking the long flight over to Argentina on January 16th. We hope everyone is healthy and happy

  4. That place looks awesome!!! SO wish we could have met you guys there. And finally food pics! (usually our favorite photo subject ;). That was some crazy looking grub! It's funny that Kaveh (HI KAVEH!) mentioned Blue Bottle,as we are holding 3 bags for you guys in our freezer :) BEST coffee we've had in the States, for sure. Italy's Cappuccinos... well, you know....

This looks like our kind of place. When we all "make-it", lets be sure to go back there together. Actually, lets go back there together no matter what. We can drag Pat with us too to verify the authenticity of the Komodo Dragons (don't tell him if they are real or not. Make him come! :)

The monkey picture is ridiculous. National Geographic would be happy to buy it from you, btw; No stealing necessary. Seriously though, check out the pics that one last years Nat. Geo. photo contest:

  12. We're tomos, Scott. I think you guys should add a forum section to your website so the three of us can keep chatting after this adventure winds down. We could reminisce about past pictures, ponder questions left unanswered ,ie. "why DID the Santorini turtle cross the road?" (It's been bothering me not knowing), post pictures of our kids, etc.... Just throwing it out there... With Kocham

  13. Yes! We're getting antsy just waiting for the next posting.
( I learned a new word "antsy"! Domo Arigato. )

I think "Adding a forum section" is a good idea! Because it will help me improve my English.

I've heard this phrase before. "Why did the chicken cross the road?"
I don't know this answer. But I learned that everything cross the road in US. Domo Arigato.

Enjoy your time in South America, Scott-san & Emilia-san!
