Bangkok- A Golden Post

Hello from Phuket, Thailand (pronounced poo-ket),

We just got here after spending approximately a week in the capital city of Bangkok. We boarded a bus at 7:00 PM and were at our beach (Karon Beach) at around 4:00 PM the following day. We aren't having much luck with busses as of late, but the scenery was nice, and we are able to entertain each other, so no problem. Bangkok was not like we had imagined. Some of the shopping areas were similar to Rodeo drive, very upscale with many farangs (Thai term for foreigners of a European descent). This was completely different from India where we found ourselves to be in the very small minority. We were able to blend in again. Hooray for that!

If you have never been to Bangkok, it is a place not to be missed. Spread throughout the city are Buddhist temples with some of the most beautiful pieces of art we have seen to date. Some of the temple grounds are rather large and house hundreds of Buddha statues. Everything is colorful and set up so the each person can feel at peace while they are there. We were able to see several temples during our stay and every one was incredible.

While in Thailand, it is also a necessity to try the milk teas with tapioca. We completed our fifth one each when we got into Phuket city. They could cut down on the ice a bit and replace it with more milk tea, but I am a glutton so maybe this is my issue.

We have been very happy in Thailand so far and judging by our first day at Karon Beach, we have many great days to follow. Please enjoy the following images from our week in Bangkok

The Grand Palace in Bangkok- We overheard one guide say, "if you have been to Bangkok and haven't visited the Grand Palace, you haven't been to Bangkok."

Mila getting all artistic with this shot

The Emerald Buddha- the most sacred Buddha in all of Thailand, no pictures allowed

We took a picture

The second must see complex in Bangkok (Wat Pho)

Pagodas everywhere

The reclining Buddha- 115 feet long, 49 feet tall, and 33 feet wide. This was breathtaking

Mila dropping coins into 108 buckets that represent the 108 auspicious symbols of Buddha

Wat Saket- The Golden Mount. You are treated to a view of the city at the top

Benchamabophit (marble temple)

Wat Arun- from across the river before our river taxi took us home

Other sites

Drummers

Buddhas around the city

Buddhist Monks

My beard on the night it was taken away from me (fluffed up for affect). It wasn't quite this creepy in person

We have been enjoying Thailand so much that we decided to maximize our 30 day visa. We are going to island hop for the next 3 weeks before heading to Malaysia. We hope everyone is living their best life everyday. We miss you guys and can't wait to see you all again soon.

  1. Hey Guys - Brian (of Sarah and Brian) here. If you guys cross over into Malaysia, make sure you check out the Perhentian Islands just off the northeast coast. Bar none, it was one of the most beautiful and relaxing places I've been. I stayed on the west side of Perhentian Kecil (which I think is the smaller more affordable island). If you miss it, you'll never be the same ;)

  3. you know, mostly i see this stuff (the pyramids, the taj majal, the oversized prostrate golden buddha) and i'm thinking to myself, "wow, amazing," but there's a another part of me that is like, "what the eff were these people thinking?" seriously, whole civilizations had to be nutso to conceive of erecting these wonders...
