Back to Nature

It doesn't get any more peaceful than this, six days in the mountains of Austria with challenging, empty trails begging to be hiked! And hike them we did. From the moment we arrived, we knew that we were going to have a special trip. Our home was perfectly located between two lakes and the trails were plentiful. We could definitely live this slow paced life for a while.

One funny story from our trip:

Mila and I took a walk to the town's center on a Sunday. Like many European businesses on Sunday, the one store in the entire area was closed. Craving gummy candy, with six euros in our pocket, we started knocking on the villagers' doors. No, not really, but we did want candy and we were lucky enough to run into a vending machine near a closed business. We came up with a game plan of what we could purchase to most effectively utilize our funds. Both of us agreed that we needed Haribo cherry gummies. We put 1.40€ in the machine and watched as our candy came spinning from its container. Just when it was about to drop, the coil grabbed the edge of the package and held on tightly. "WHAT DO WE DO NOW?" we have limited resources and our candy is stuck in limbo. Like every other sane person, I start throwing a shoulder into the machine, at first slow, but then with more ferocity. The candy is hanging on for dear life!!! Finally, a lady appears from the automatic door of the closed store where the vending machine is while I am in full charge. "What the *%**# are you guys doing to my machine?" she inquires in German. We aren't positive that's what she said, but we could tell it was something like that judging by the scowl on her face. We pointed at the candy, with sad looks in our eyes and said, "it's stuck." She then opened the machine with a key, gave us one last dirty look and sent us on our way. We still had 4.60€ to spend, but decided we had done enough damage to the American image for one day. Hopefully, she thought we were Canadian.

But that is neither here nor there. Please enjoy the following views. We sure did.

A view from our balcony upon arrival

Day 1- Hike from Gosau to Halstatt- probably 25 km done this day through donkeys, cows and muddy terrain. We got lost several times and tried to conserve our half sandwich in case we weren't going to make it out of the woods. We made it out.

For those Mario fans like me

We were rewarded with this view near the end

Day 2- Hike from our place to Gosausee (lake) 7 km, past 3rd lake 6 km, then 2.5 hour hike to Adamshutte and back home the same way we came. We left at 9:30 in the morning and returned at 8:30 in the evening. Long day but well worth the journey

Lake 1

Lake 3 (Lake 2 was small)

The journey to Adamshutte

3 lakes towards the top

Day 3- Chill day at Lake Halstatt. Perfect place to rest the legs and the buns

Our swan friends

Me fishing Mila's ring out of the lake after it jumped off her finger (you can see the ring at the end of the stick)

Goodnight

Day 4- Rain, mud and ponchos

Day 5- Last full day in Gosau. This place is beautiful everyday, but especially when there is not a cloud in the sky

Thanks for reading our post. Budapest awaits us!!! We miss you all.

  3. well, you're kind of going blog crazy now. impossible to keep up with it all! anyway, those pictures are lovely; the last two especially remind me of "the sound of music," which is a great, great movie, one of my favorites of all time (right next to saw III and midnight meat train).

glad you got your candy. personally i would have opted for junior mints or, barring those, reeses pieces (something chocolaty, anyway), but at least nobody dislocated a shoulder getting the gummies and that's always a positive in a country that practices voodoo medicine (okay, i made this up...although they might...i don't really know)
